The Next Phase of Physical Security in the Middle East: Cloud interoperability

Cloud technology has become integral to physical security, changing not only where data is stored but how systems are deployed, managed and expanded. What began as remote access to video is now an ecosystem where cameras, access control, artificial intelligence (AI), analytics and business applications interact across edge devices, on-premise infrastructure and cloud environments.

This shift to cloud interoperability is particularly relevant across the Middle East, where governments and enterprises continue to invest in AI, smart cities, intelligent transportation and digital government services. As these programs scale, organizations need security systems that integrate technologies from multiple manufacturers while remaining adaptable.

The Rise of Cloud in Physical Security

Cloud has expanded physical security well beyond video storage. Many organizations now use hybrid architectures that combine edge computing with cloud services to manage devices, analyze data and provide secure access across multiple locations — centralizing operations while retaining local processing where required.

As adoption increases, interoperability becomes critical. Cameras, video management systems, analytics applications and cloud platforms must exchange information consistently, regardless of who developed them. Without common standards, integrating new technologies or expanding systems becomes unnecessarily complex.

Why This Matters in the Middle East

Across the Middle East, digital transformation programs are accelerating investment in connected infrastructure. According to the UAE Government, the country’s digital economy is expected to contribute more than 20% of GDP by 2031. Such projects involve thousands of devices across multiple sites, generating video and metadata that must be shared securely between edge devices, cloud platforms and business applications. Initiatives such as NEOM in Saudi Arabia illustrate how cloud-connected security systems must support multiple technologies operating together at scale.

Organizations want the flexibility to adopt new technologies without replacing existing infrastructure or becoming tied to a single vendor. Open, interoperable systems let them add capabilities as requirements evolve while protecting long-term investments.

AI Makes Interoperability Even More Important

The camera’s role is changing. Its value lies not only in recording video but in generating metadata for object detection, occupancy monitoring, vehicle recognition and other AI-driven applications — information now as valuable as the video itself, enabling organizations to automate workflows, improve investigations and generate operational insight.

To unlock that value, metadata must be understood consistently across devices and software platforms. Standardized methods for exchanging it reduce integration complexity and allow organizations to deploy AI solutions from different vendors without creating isolated systems.

Building the Foundation for Cloud Interoperability

Recognizing the industry’s shift toward cloud-native deployments, ONVIF established a dedicated working group on cloud connectivity. Their work supports common approaches for cloud onboarding, secure authentication, and cloud recording. The recent Profile V Release Candidate marks another step in this effort, contributing to a more standardized approach that helps manufacturers develop interoperable cloud-connected security solutions.

For end users, these developments provide greater flexibility when expanding systems, integrating new technologies or adopting cloud services, without sacrificing compatibility across their security ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

Cloud is becoming the foundation for a new generation of intelligent physical security systems, supporting AI, analytics and connected services that extend well beyond traditional video surveillance. As organizations across the Middle East continue to invest in digital infrastructure, interoperability will play an essential role in ensuring that security technologies can evolve alongside changing operational requirements.

Open standards have long enabled collaboration across the physical security industry. As cloud adoption continues to grow, they will remain fundamental to helping manufacturers, systems integrators and end users build security ecosystems that are flexible, scalable and prepared for future innovation.
