ONVIF Newsletter April 2013

Greetings from ONVIF Chairman Per Björkdahl!

I’m very excited to have taken on the role of Chairman of the ONVIF Steering Committee and working with ONVIF members and the industry to continue to promote ONVIF’s mission of overall interoperability. ONVIF has gained extraordinary momentum in its short history and continuing that progress will certainly be one of the cornerstones of my tenure.

Over the next two months we have some exciting events planned where the industry can see firsthand the possibilities of interoperability with ONVIF. This week at ISC West 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA, we will be hosting a networking reception that will provide an opportunity for the industry to see multiple devices that conform to ONVIF Profile S. This is part of the Profile concept introduced to the market to further enhance the interoperability in conformant products. Profile S, our first profile which tackles video and audio streaming, PTZ and relay output control as well as video encoder configuration and multicast, is available now and Profile G for recording and storage and Profile C for physical access control is scheduled to be released this year.

In May at IFSEC 2013 in Birmingham, U.K., ONVIF will be exhibiting for the first time on the show floor at a major industry trade show. Our booth will bring a wide range of interoperable solutions from different manufacturers directly to show attendees who can view many different solutions from member companies over the four days of the show.

These events are part of our ongoing efforts to further educate the industry on the benefits and advancements of standards and interoperability in the market, goals that will benefit us all now and for years to come.

Sincerely,
Per Björkdahl, Axis Communications

Driving ONVIF forward: An interview with the new Chairman

What is your top priority as ONVIF’s chair of the Steering Committee?

Per Björkdahl: My main priority is to maintain the momentum that ONVIF has been able to achieve over the past five years, and continue to educate the market that ONVIF is available, that it is beneficial and that it is a  longterm solution for ensuring that end users and specifiers can realize the full potential and flexibility of IP technology.

Any specific goals for the short term?

Per Björkdahl: In the near term, I will be focused on delivering Profile C for physical access control and Profile G for recording and storage to the market while continuing with Profile S, which handles functionalities like video and audio streaming and PTZ and relay output control. Additionally, I’ll be focused on our ongoing processes of refining our test and conformance tools to meet the needs of the marketplace.

What are your thoughts on standardization for the future and ONVIF’s role?

Per Björkdahl: Both ONVIF and IP have experienced rapid deployment. With that in mind, the next few years will be focused not only on moving forward into interoperability of new technologies like intrusion detection, but we will also concentrate on refining the overall process of standardization. A strong focus on the conformance process will ensure the quality of the specification and its continuing acceptance in the market.

News summary

ONVIF Named on Top 40 Influencers List by IFSECGlobal.com

ONVIF and its new Chairman Per Björkdahl were cited as No. 3 among the Top 40 Most Influential People in Security & Fire by IFSECGlobal.com, the newly launched global online community for security and fire professionals.

In recognizing ONVIF, IFSECGlobal.com said the organization has “done some extremely interesting work to unify the surveillance community” and “has simplified security technology interoperability.”

Additionally, IFSECGlobal.com’s Content and Community Manager Rob Ratcliff said ONVIF, now under Björkdahl’s leadership, “will be at the forefront of continued physical security development.”

In response to this citation, Björkdahl said, “ONVIF is honored that its ongoing efforts to create standards for the security industry is recognized. In this everevolving process, we will continue to focus our efforts on releasing new Profiles for access control and video storage, following our successful Profile S for streaming video, in the months ahead.”

Eighth Developers’ Plugfest Tests Profiles S, C and G

The 8th ONVIF Developers’ Plugfest at the Move Hotel in Mogliano Veneto, Italy, March 4 to 6, drew 60 engineers representing 28 ONVIF member companies.

The group came together to test the interoperability of their latest Profile S implementations, but they also included Profile C, which applies to access control features, and Profile G for recording features. In all, more than 430 hours of testing took place during the three-day event.

For the first time, the ONVIF Technical Services Committee provided User Scenario Testing, which allowed a client connected with multiple devices such as video management system, NVR and/or IP camera that supported the same Profile to verify its ONVIF
interoperability based on different enduser scenarios. In addition, there was the traditional peer-to-peer testing to verify device interoperability among others supporting the same Profile.

Each plugfest provides handson, practical experience for member companies to check on and improve their products’ ONVIF interoperability. The next plugfest is scheduled to take place in North America in September 2013.
