Seamless Integration of IP-based Physical Security Products

What is ONVIF?

ONVIF is a not-for-profit organization that aims to standardize communication between IP-based physical security products such as video security cameras.

ONVIF standardization is an element of the Technical Specifications and Requirements of the Security Industry Regulatory Agency (SIRA) in the UAE.

ONVIF is a forum comprised of 470 member companies from within the IP security industry. These members include organizations from across the world including, Axis Communications, Bosch, Dahua Technology, Hanwha Vision, Honeywell, Intel, and Motorola.

Three cornerstones of ONVIF:

  1. Standardization of communication between IP-based physical security products and services.
  2. Interoperability regardless of brand and deployment (on-premise, cloud, hybrid solutions).
  3. Openness to all companies and organizations.

With more than 30,000 conformant products, ONVIF standardized interfaces enable security equipment from various brands to work together, whether deployed on-premise, in the cloud, or in hybrid solutions.

Why Use ONVIF?

  • Interoperability: In a multi-vendor environment, ONVIF enables products from different brands to work together.
  • Future-proof: No vendor lock-in, giving you the flexibility to upgrade components without replacing the entire system.
  • Wide selection: Choose among thousands of ONVIF conformant products to match your exact needs and preferences, regardless of vendor.

ONVIF Structure

ONVIF functionalities are organized into profiles, each defining a specific set of features necessary for standard conformance.

  • Mandatory Features: core functionalities that must be supported for ONVIF conformance.
  • Conditional Features: additional capabilities that are available depending on the device, such as PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) controls in cameras equipped with these functions.

Profiles simplify the selection of compatible products. Each profile encapsulates a specific group of functionalities necessary for standard conformance and interoperability.

Each conformant product must support at least one of the following ONVIF profiles:

Conformant Products

Every ONVIF conformant product is listed in the conformance database on our website. The listing verifies that the products follow the ONVIF conformance process, which includes meeting the necessary specification requirements and passing the relevant test tool.
