As we enter 2026, we are proud to announce that the ONVIF conformant products ecosystem has eclipsed 35,000 conformant products.<\/strong> This milestone\u00a0represents\u00a0nearly two\u00a0decades of collaboration with manufacturers, integrators,\u00a0consultants\u00a0and end users to create an environment where interoperability enables\u00a0flexibility in choice of\u00a0vendors and\u00a0wide selection of\u00a0products.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0more than\u00a035,000 products<\/a>\u00a0that\u00a0conform\u00a0to our interoperability specifications are\u00a0most\u00a0definitely not an endpoint.\u00a0These products conform to our\u00a0current\u00a0suite of profiles<\/a>,\u00a0which\u00a0supports most of the major elements needed to build a comprehensive security system – integrating surveillance,\u00a0access control\u00a0and\u00a0important\u00a0functions\u00a0such as\u00a0license plate recognition, facial recognition, and\u00a0other\u00a0advanced analytics.\u00a0As manufacturers continue to innovate and release new products that rely on ONVIF for interoperability, the number of conformant products will continue to grow. And as we release new specifications for cloud connectivity, AI and analytics metadata, and audio interoperability<\/strong>, we expect the\u00a0size of our\u00a0conformant products database to exponentially increase as we support the industry in transitioning to these technologies.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What exactly does\u00a0this growth in\u00a0ONVIF conformant products\u00a0mean for you? Freedom of choice to select the best products for your application, from one of the industry\u2019s most expansive \u201ccatalogs\u201d of interoperable products.\u00a0A manufacturing facility can select\u00a0a\u00a0thermal\u00a0camera\u00a0from one brand\u00a0for perimeter detection, high-resolution\u00a0camera\u00a0models\u00a0of\u00a0another\u00a0brand\u00a0for quality control, and PTZ cameras\u00a0from a different brand\u00a0for production monitoring, all capable of\u00a0integrating\u00a0into a single\u00a0management platform, regardless of vendor, using\u00a0common\u00a0ONVIF profiles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Similarly, an airport deploying a security system can\u00a0integrate\u00a0wide-angle cameras with facial recognition capabilities for terminal entrances, license plate recognition cameras for parking and vehicle access points integrated with access control, thermal imaging for perimeter fence lines, and high-resolution PTZ units for monitoring gate areas and baggage claim\u00a0from a host of different technology providers\u00a0via ONVIF.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Path to 35,000<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When ONVIF was founded in 2008, proprietary protocols dominated the surveillance landscape. Organizations were locked into single-vendor environments where adding a camera from a different manufacturer meant replacing an entire system or accepting high integration costs. Manufacturers were forced to use these proprietary protocols during the IP investment boom, but this slowed the pace of innovation, as engineers spent valuable hours developing individual drivers between products instead of innovating new features or solutions.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our first conformant products in 2009 enabled devices to communicate regardless of manufacturer. Since then, our ecosystem has grown steadily. At 10,000 products, we saw broad industry adoption. At 20,000, our specifications covered access control products, edge recording capabilities and metadata support. The milestone of 35,000 products reflects the expansion from basic device communication to more advanced requirements.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite all of this progress, our industry is facing integration challenges today that closely parallel those from 2008, specifically around cloud architectures. Closed APIs, vendor-specific integration requirements, and platform dependencies are creating the same constraints that we addressed for on-prem systems. Organizations that once faced camera-to-VMS compatibility issues now confront camera-to-cloud integration challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We consider the stakes to be equally high. Cloud dependencies create more complex operational entanglements than on-prem systems. Data storage, analytics engines, and management functions become tightly coupled to specific cloud platforms, increasing costs and limiting flexibility in changing vendors. As cloud adoption accelerates, and organizations seek scalability, remote accessibility, and advanced analytics, without a standardized camera to cloud approach, organizations will face the same proprietary constraints ONVIF resolved for on-prem deployments nearly two decades ago.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Work in 2026<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To that end, much of our work over the next year is focused on\u00a0finalizing\u00a0our cloud connectivity\u00a0standards and\u00a0applying\u00a0close to\u00a020\u00a0years of standardization experience to address these new but familiar challenges. Our cloud connectivity specifications will address how devices authenticate, stream\u00a0and record\u00a0video.<\/strong>\u00a0We’re\u00a0working with cloud platform providers,\u00a0hardware and software\u00a0manufacturers,\u00a0and\u00a0other industry stakeholders\u00a0to ensure these standards reflect actual deployment requirements. This work builds on\u00a0nearly\u00a020\u00a0years of experience balancing manufacturer innovation with organizational flexibility.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alongside cloud, AI and advanced analytics are changing how organizations use security systems, with computer vision algorithms detecting anomalies, classifying objects, and generating actionable insights.\u00a0\u00a0Our standardization work is looking at enabling flexible architectures across\u00a0on-prem\u00a0and cloud deployments without single-vendor dependencies.<\/strong>\u00a0Our AI and analytics metadata standards\u00a0can\u00a0ensure that insights generated by one system can be used by another without proprietary translation layers, extending the value of an AI investment and preventing analytics from becoming another source of dependency on a single vendor.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While this work is focused on\u00a0leveraging\u00a0the benefits of AI, we are also\u00a0finalizing\u00a0a standard that can protect\u00a0surveillance\u00a0video from generative AI and deepfakes\u00a0<\/strong>using authentication technology\u00a0in\u00a0the camera.\u00a0Our video authentication specification enables cameras to cryptographically sign video at the point of capture, ensuring that\u00a0the security footage can be verified as authentic and unaltered. This is critical to\u00a0maintaining\u00a0the integrity of video evidence in security operations,\u00a0investigations,\u00a0and legal proceedings.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0third prong\u00a0of our 2026 focus is audio interoperability.\u00a0Security systems increasingly integrate audio analytics, two-way communication, and ambient intelligence capabilities using audio sensors.\u00a0\u00a0We’re\u00a0developing specifications to enable organizations to select audio-only\u00a0devices based on\u00a0their performance and feature set<\/strong>s,\u00a0as opposed to those from specific manufacturers\u00a0that\u00a0have already created proprietary integrations between audio devices and\u00a0VMS\u00a0platforms.\u00a0This will increase a security system\u2019s ability to capture threats in blind spots where visual surveillance is compromised and improve our industry\u2019s technological capacity for proactive vs reactive security.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As our cloud, AI metadata, and audio standards gain adoption, we expect substantial growth in conformant products\u2014not just more devices, but products that enable more flexible deployments across hybrid edge-cloud architectures.  For those specifying, designing, deploying, or managing physical security systems, our work on standards continues to address vendor choice and system flexibility both today and for the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
